Subject: Law, Politics and Religion Half-Day Symposium
The Edinburgh University Law School, with support from the Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World, presents:
'LAW, POLITICS AND RELIGION' Half-Day Symposium to be held at Cecilia's Hall in Edinburgh on September 9th, 2pm - 6pm.
The symposium will examine the relationship between law, politics and religion within contemporary Europe and Great Britain, with particular reference to religious equality, discrimination, citizenship integration, secularism and multiculturalism. It will be introduced by Prof Zenon Bankowski from the School of Law and feature contributions from:
Prof Christian Joppke (University of Bern), author of 'Citizenship and Immigration' (2010), 'Veil: Mirror of Identity' (2009), 'Selecting by Origin: Ethnic Migration in the Liberal State' (2005) and 'Immigration and the Nation-State: The United States, Germany and Great Britain' (1999), and co-author (with John Torpey) of 'Legal Integration of Islam: A Transatlantic Comparison' (2013).
Dr Nasar Meer (Northumbria University), author of 'Citizenship, Identity and the Politics of Multiculturalism' (2010) and 'Race and Ethnicity' (forthcoming), and editor of' European Multiculturalisms' (2011) and 'Racialization and Religion' (2013).
Prof Paul Weller (University of Derby), author of 'A Mirror for our Times: The Rushdie Affair and the Future of Multiculturalism' (2009) 'Religious Diversity in the UK' (2008) and 'Time for a Change: Reconfiguring Religion, State and Society' (2005).
At the end, the three speakers and Prof Bankowski will join for a roundtable discussion chaired by Prof Hugh Goddard (Director, Alwaleed Centre).
Followed by a wine reception.
