I agree. In most cases I also find the intervention at early stages with mediation often remedies the problems and rarely have we required more "specialised" opinion.

Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Psychiatrist referral in work related stress?
Good evening. From my understanding work related stress is not a medical condition. It is stressed caused by perceived work place issues and if the employee and employer work together they can usually be resolved therefore I would not feel that a referral would be appropriate and mediation may be more appropriate. Kind regards. Tracy ------Original Message------

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Psychiatrist referral in work related stress?
Sent: 2 Jul 2013 16:48
Good afternoon all,
When investigating reports of work related stress, I wondered if anyone has referred the Employee to a Psychiatrist to evaluate if an underlying mental health diagnosable condition exists?
In the same vein as we would perhaps refer someone with a reported potentially work related skin problem to a Dermatologist to confirm or rule out work relatedness, would anyone adopt the same approach with a Psyche referral for work related stress? I'm not sure that in our culture this would take place, but I work for a US based company and this approach may be more common in the States than the UK, where going to see a Psychiatrist is not seen as a big deal.
I'm interested to know.
If you have, I'd be glad to hear of the outcome and your opinions.
Many thanks,
Roisin
