Health Foundation PhD Fellowship Awards in Improvement Science, King's Improvement Science, King's College, London

King’s Improvement Science has been awarded funding for two prestigious doctoral fellowships in the field of improvement science in healthcare. King’s College London is one of only eight leading centres in the UK chosen to host these fellowships by the Health Foundation<http://www.health.org.uk/>, an independent charitable foundation that works to continuously improve the quality of healthcare in the UK.

These fellowships offer a new training opportunity to specialise in improvement science to outstanding individuals early in their career. It will enable them to work with partners and collaborators in the health service, and ultimately contribute to the knowledge base of the science of improvement. Fellows will be supported by social and clinical scientists and have access to the Health Foundation Improvement Science Network. Up to 2 four year fellowships will be available for students on a full-time basis for either 3 plus 1 (3 year PhD plus 1 year post-doctoral or 1 plus 3 (1 year MRes plus 3 year PhD). The PhD studentships will commence in October 2013/January 2014 and provide an annual tax-free stipend of £15,740, rising to £18,221 in year 4. Full coverage of tuition fees and a conference/travel and research costs allowance is also included.

Subject areas

Fellowships will be available to students wishing to undertake a PhD research degree around the three themes outlined below.

1. Exploration of the Modified Early Obstetric Warning System
(MEOWS) to enable timely management of critical illness in childbearing women

2. Relationship between costs and quality in healthcare and
commissioner valuation of stroke treatment

3. What counts as improvement in NHS and social care to
service users and patients?

Eligibility

Applicants must be promising individuals who are UK/EU nationals with a first class or upper second class degree with clear evidence of first class work. For the 3+1 award, applicants should have an appropriate Masters degree including sound training in research methods (or equivalent experience in a relevant area) and meet university entrance requirements<http://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/pg/school/index.aspx>. Relevant backgrounds include medicine, and allied health professions, management, psychology, sociology, political science, geography, economics, law and other fields with a substantive health or social science content. Provision for additional training will be made where appropriate. Experience as a patient / service user is also required for study 3.

How to apply

Stage 1 – Initial enquiries and expressions of interest

Potential applicants are encouraged to make initial contact with the named lead for the topic which interests them initially by email to arrange a phone conversation regarding questions you want to ask about any aspect of the studentships or the research topics.

Stage 2 – Applications and interviews

Applicants should send the following documents with their application:

  *   A full CV including contact details for two referees
  *   A personal statement (maximum 1,000 words) explaining why you are interested in training in improvement sciences and the research topic for which you are applying, and what you see as your future career aspirations after completing a PhD.
  *   One example of document, report or publication of which you are the sole or main author – these could be dissertation theses, research reports, journal papers or other materials.

Shortlisted candidates will also be asked to submit a formal online application to the relevant doctoral programme via the King’s Admissions Portal by 12pm 13 September. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted with instructions on how to submit their online application. Please do not complete the online form prior to the stages above and until you have been asked to do so.
