Peter,
Yes these were the sorts of companies I have been thinking of, the caution I'd have for cultural heritage work is that in their line of work there is no need for use of colour rendition charts for trying to reproduce colour more accurately, using a linear curve, white balancing off the chart etc. as outdoor photography has no need for this type of photography. I've seen many a freelancer from other parts of the photographic industry try their hands at CH photography by putting their own 'personality' into a photograph of a painting, it's not a pretty sight.

Some years back, we had our office in a Hove mews and another company based there had one of those extendible poles mounted on a van. I think their main client base was estate agents and property developers. I remember their director, Ben Yates, showing me how it worked and it was as you described - remotely controlled from a laptop at ground level.
This is the relevant gallery bit of his company's site: http://www.threesixtygroup.co.uk/photos-elevated
All the best

This could be from a cherry-picker, however the image I know I have seen in the recent past is photographers using a camera mounted on an extendible pole. Maybe this is an image of National Trust conservators at work, or some Wiki Loves Public Art volunteers at work. The camera would be controlled remotely from a laptop, tethered on the floor.
