Dear Colleagues,
This is to inform you of the international conference "Towards a History of Sound-Symbolic Theories" we are organizing in Dijon, France, on 20 and 21 Febraury 2014 (website: https://sites.google.com/site/thosst2014/).
The conference aims to bring together specialists from different fields (linguistics, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, history of religions) to analyse different ways in which the hypothesis of a motivated relationship between sound and meaning in language has been formulated, defended and used in history, in different traditions (Western, Jewish, Arab, Indian, Chinese, Japanese...).
Proposals about the history of British and American sound-symbolic theories (for example John Wallis' 1653, Hensleigh Wedgwood's 1845, Edward Tylor's 1871, Richard Paget's 1930, Dwight Bolinger's 1949, etc.) would be particularly appreciated. Deadline for proposals (500 words abstract with a short bibliography) is 30 October 2013. Please see the conference website for more detailed information.
I'll be grateful if you spread this information as widely as possible.
Best wishes,
Luca Nobile
