italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear Colleagues
Please permit me to draw to your attention an interview I did with Franca Rame, and which will be published tomorrow (10 July). It was done mainly in February this year and turned out to be the last interview Franca was able to give before her death.
Franca was a figlia d'arte, probably the last of her kind. The Rame family were also a touring company, and so she had valuable, first hand knowledge of the improvisational theatre which was once the core of the Italian tradition. In this interview she discusses her life and experience in theatre, her memories of working with her family and her views on contemporary theatre. She sheds new light on the political plays she and Dario Fo staged in 1960/70s, her own activities in Soccorso Rosso, the organisation she set up to help 'political' prisoners in Italy and which caused her and Dario to be refused visas to America. She also discusses feminism as well as, obviously, her life-long relationship with Dario Fo.
