italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear Colleagues:
I am trying to determine if the term "melodramma" is ever used in
Italian literary criticism to refer to the pastoral plays of, for
example, Guarini. I have come across an Anglophone critic who uses the
term "melodrama" to refer to Italian pastoral plays. I cannot figure
out if he is using this term loosely or if he means the Guarini plays
were accompanied by music and so examples of melologhi, which the critic
has rendered as "melodrama."
I am also trying to figure out if a word in Italian theater criticism
exists that is equivalent to the English term "melodrama" as it is
applied to Pixerecourt, Sardou, etc. In other words, in the Italian
context, I am trying to disentangle the terms melologo, melodramma,
dramma pastorale, tragicommedia, and the English "melodrama," and to
discover if the term "melodramma" is (and always was) reserved
exclusively (or at least primarily) for "opera lirica."
Any help would be appreciated. Please feel free to respond off-list.
Best,
John
