The position is in many ways privileged and attractive. In Sweden there are relatively few chairs, so the holder is guaranteed a high level of autonomy and good working conditions: limited teaching load, mainly on the graduate levels and much space for research. Options of applying for research grants are very favorable for qualified researchers. Lund is a fairly old-fashioned university, with limited managerialism and bureaucracy. We elect heads of departments, deans and VCs/presidents. Education is free in Sweden, so there are no serious efforts to turn the school into a 'business'. There are no RAE, REF, or similar research assessments and no strong pressure to publish only in certain journals. In Lund there is a relatively large, very active research group offering a friendly, supportive and creative research environment, with many workshops, retreats, and many leading guest researchers. Research includes critical management studies, leadership (or rather 'leadership'), reflexive methodology, branding work, organizational stupidities, action research, power and control, identity themes, knowledge work, organizational change, etc. The research group has published extensively and some of it is widely cited. The group is very international and includes people from Sweden, UK, Holland, Germany, Austria, France, United States, New Zealand and India. All research is qualitatively or conceptually oriented. Lund is a very attractive university city, only 40 minutes away from Copenhagen with frequent direct train connections. See link to article in New York Times below.
