Hi
I am organising the/ Policy & Politics/ annual conference in Bristol on
the 17/18 September and I wondered if there was some way you could make
the members of your association aware that Professor John Keane of the
University of Sydney is giving the keynote plenary lecture on 'Chinese
Democracy and the Future of the State'.
John Keane is Director of the new Institute for Democracy and Human
Rights at the University of Sydney. Among his best-known books are /The
Media and Democracy/
<http://johnkeane.net/books/the-media-democracy/about-the-book> (translated
into more than 25 languages); the best-selling biography /Tom Paine: A
Political Life/
<http://johnkeane.net/books/tom-paine-a-political-life/about-the-book>
(2009);
a new interpretation of the gains and losses of globalisation /Global
Civil Society?/
<http://johnkeane.net/books/global-civil-society/about-the-book> (2003);
/Violence
and Democracy/
<http://johnkeane.net/books/violence-and-democracy/about-the-book> (2004);
and /The Future of Representative Democracy/
<http://johnkeane.net/books-edited-by-john-keane/the-future-of-representative-democracy>
(2011).
He writes a column for the Melbourne-based web platform /The
Conversation/ <http://theconversation.edu.au/columns/john-keane-267>.
His /Life and Death of Democracy/
<http://www.thelifeanddeathofdemocracy.org/> was short-listed for
the /2010 Non-Fiction Prime Minister's Literary Award./ It is the first
full-scale history of democracy for over a century.
If any members of your association would like to attend the whole or
just part of the conference they would be very welcome indeed. John
Keane is speaking on the 18 September and a day rate is available.
