*FROM*: Department of Modern and Applied Languages, University of
Westminster
*TOPIC*: Lecturer in Chinese Studies
This is a new post in the University of Westminster’s Department of
Modern and Applied Languages. Specifically the post is to replace the
teaching responsibilities of Professor Harriet Evans, Director of the
Contemporary China Centre, for the duration of a Leverhulme Trust funded
research project, from September 2013 until August 2016. The post-holder
will join a team of 7 staff (5.5 Full time equivalent) and a number of
part-time visiting lecturers. This is a part time position (0.3 FTE),
fixed term contract for 3 years.
The post-holder will be expected to manage their own teaching, research
and administrative activities within the framework set by the
Department, School and University policy, with mentoring support from
academic staff. The duties and responsibilities associated with this
post include teaching second year undergraduate Chinese Area Studies,
and second and third year undergraduate translation from Chinese into
English. The post-holder may also be asked to contribute to other
courses within the Department.
Chinese Studies are key to the School’s and the Department’s research
activities and to the University’s forthcoming REF submission in Area
(Asian) Studies. While the post is mainly to replace Evans’ teaching
responsibilities, the post-holder will be expected to contribute to the
research activities of the Asian Studies programme in the Department, as
well as to the Department’s overall research environment.
The post-holder will possess the specialist knowledge necessary to be
able to deliver high quality teaching and support to established
teaching programmes and to engage in high quality individual and/or
collaborative research.
The courses the post-holder will be required to teach necessitate a high
level of fluency in Chinese, and a comprehensive knowledge of China’s
twentieth century history and contemporary society. Candidates should
already have or be nearing completion of a PhD, and some teaching
experience is desirable. The post-holder will be highly motivated and
will be able to communicate knowledge and ideas clearly. S/he will also
be committed to contributing towards curriculum development and design
as well as to the development of the Asian Studies research programme.
Preference will be given to applicants whose research engages with the
politics of culture (including religion and cultural heritage) and
cultural studies, gender and sexuality, urban society, or the Chinese
diaspora.
Closing date: Wednesday, 10 July 2013. Interviews are likely to be held
on Friday, 19 July 2013
