Hi,

Here at King's, students are only permitted to use a calculator from the Casio fx-83 or fx-85 ranges. This makes it very clear, quick and straightforward for our invigilators when they conduct calculator checks in the exam hall and generally does not cause any problems or disturbances.

Students have to bring their own calculator with them to the exam but they are made aware of the permitted modules at the start of the academic year by the relevant academic departments (as well as being well documented on our web pages and in our student communication prior to exam periods). The main complaint we get is when a student has a calculator which is possibly as basic as those permitted, but ultimately is a non-approved model and therefore confiscated. These incidents are fairly rare though and we are able to refer to all the exam information on the web and that they have been emailed.

Best wishes,

Graeme

Hi Jackie,

Here at Sheffield Hallam University we have the following policy statement:

"Students are permitted to use silent, non-programmable calculators, unless expressly prohibited for a particular examination. Where appropriate, however, programmable calculators will be permitted in examinations where authorised by a Module Leader in accordance with the assessment regulations issued to these particular students."

This puts more emphasis on the module leaders when writing their exam papers.

Scott

Hi Jackie

Here at Aston, we provide the calculators to the exam rooms. This obviously throws up a couple of issues - cost and storage space but it seems that we have traditionally supplied calculators in exams as the alternative of students bringing in their own would be too problematic to police -our invigilators spend enough time dealing with suspected plagiarism cases and constant toilet breaks. It seems that there is no perfect system - or is there?

Maybe one of our colleagues has the answer!

Lesley

Subject: University approved calculator

We at Southampton have had University-approved calculators for about 15 years or so. We use Casio fx85-ES calculators which are stamped with the University logo at source by our suppliers and sold through our on-site bookshop and the Student Union shop.

This is universally disliked by students who have to pay more than the RRP to cover the costs of stamping the items. We've also done a bit of web research and it is possible to dismantle and 'enhance' the calculator quite easily; unfortunately the results of illegally enhancing the calculator are very similar to one of the normal modes! This makes it very difficult for the invigilators to police, as you can imagine.

I'm inclined to ask our academic community to review our policy to see if we need to continue to be this restrictive, so I'm looking for a bit of advice from any of you who have been/are in a similar situation as to any benefits or pitfalls you've encountered.

Many thanks

Jackie
