Approximating Animals. A solo exhibition by Anthea Walsh
22 August- 19 September 2013 at Kendal Museum, Cumbria
[http://gallery.mailchimp.com/9e9b2f648709a51eed8058c85/images/antheapress.jpg]
Anthea Walsh’s new works combine elements of taxidermy craft and hand embroidery to explore ideas about the creative process, craftsmanship, illusion and our relationship to animals and nature. The result is unique mixed-media textile art that accentuates and dissolves material boundaries between human-made and animal textures.
The artworks will be displayed amongst Kendal Museum’s taxidermy specimens in its extensive natural history collection, creating an alluring juxtaposition between traditional and contemporary aesthetics.
“Kendal Museum is a place where human - animal relations come to the fore as visitors interact with intriguing animal artefacts.”
Petra Tjitske Kalshoven, Manchester University (2013)
This exhibition is part of a larger, cross-disciplinary research project entitled ‘Mastership In Taxidermy: Artistic Interventions In Human-Animal Ontologies’
Directed by Petra Tjitske Kalshoven, lecturer in the Department of Social Anthropology at Manchester University, funded by the British Academy / Leverhulme.
The project’s joint artistic and anthropological enquiry wishes to explore boundaries and connections between human and animal realms by examining taxidermy and its use in contemporary art practice.
The exhibition is accompanied by a multi-disciplinary workshop on 22 August that brings together a selection of guest speakers from different backgrounds to discuss taxidermy in the context of their practice.
