Dear Ana Maria,
I apologize for replying late to this, but was traveling until now. If
you'll excuse the shameless self-promotion, you may wish to consult what I
have written myself about ethical, methodological and theoretical
entanglements in conducting ethnography with persons engaging in violence
(specifically, police in northern India), in a chapter for a just released
book Policing and Contemporary
Governance<http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?pid=656943>,
titled "Dirty Anthropology..." (you can find a draft of it
here<http://www.academia.edu/2052231/Dirty_Anthropology_Epistemologies_of_Violence_and_Ethical_Entanglements_in_Police_Ethnography>as
well). I discuss some of the literature that other people have
suggested, including Robben, Nordstrom, Mahmood, Sluka.
You may also be interested in several chapters written by anthropologists
about working with the US military in a volume I co-edited Anthropology and
Global Counterinsurgency<http://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/A/bo8334045.html>,
especially those pieces contributed by Fosher, Griffin, Gonzalez, Gusterson
and Price. Fosher co-edited a volume with Rubinstein and Fujimura titled
"Practicing Military Anthropology" which also deals with these questions.
N.B., If you plan on attending AAA in Chicago this November, I will be
chairing a panel titled "APPROACHING PERPETRATORS: ETHICAL, METHODOLOGICAL
AND THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS" including Robben, Sluka and others the
morning of Thursday, November 21st.
Hope that helps,
