Project title: Effective use of information in patient safety and quality improvement
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, self-directed individual with a postgraduate degree (MSc or equivalent for appointment as Research Assistant, PhD or equivalent for appointment as Research Associate) in epidemiology, health services research, public health or a related subject to carry out patient safety and quality improvement research within a leading and internationally renowned group. The available post sits within the Imperial Centre for Patient Safety and Service Quality (CPSSQ). You will work on “Research Theme 1: Effective use of information” at the Centre and lead on research stream 1 (Developing safety indicators for primary and integrated care) as well as contribute to streams 2 and 3. Your research will be predominantly quantitative but, depending on your skills and interests, there may also be opportunities to carry out qualitative work in conjunction with other CPSSQ staff.
This relatively new research field provides plenty of scope for original, high profile research and career development as a health services researcher. You will be supported by experts at the Dr Foster Unit, CPSSQ, Imperial College London and external collaborators. We expect the post holder to participate fully in research activities, including publication in peer-reviewed journals and representation of the Unit and CPSSQ at meetings, seminars and international conferences. Experience in using SAS is preferable, although training will be provided as necessary. We are strongly committed to personal and professional development.
The post holder will be based at the Dr Foster Unit, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, 3 Dorset Rise, London, EC4Y 8EN. They will join a small team led by Dr Paul Aylin, Clinical Reader in Epidemiology and Public Health, who is the CPSSQ Research Theme 1 lead. CPSSQ was founded in 2007, as a partnership between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT) and Imperial College London. It is one of two UK Patient Safety Translational Research Centres (PSTRCs) funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The Centre focuses on improving patient safety and the quality of health services, with an emphasis on translational research for patient care. The group is led by Professor Charles Vincent as Director and Professor Ara Darzi as Clinical Lead, with a strong multidisciplinary team from a range of clinical and scientific fields, including medicine, surgery, psychology, pharmacy and economics.
