I agree, venous blood would be preferable but if the patient is dehydrated the haematocrit will still exceed the limits of most devices.

Isn't the issue related to peripheral shutdown/shock? Venous blood can be used on the glucose meters rather than capillary.

Correction-
The local policy is to refer a venous sample to the lab for results greater then 20mmol/L to verify the accuracy of the result. Our meters read up to 33.3mmol/L but a decision was made some time ago to check all results below 3mmol/L and above 20mmol/L with a venous sample by a different method.
