Peter,
The best (only?) example of an eighteenth century smelt mill with
chimney is the High Mill at Marrick in Swaledale. Until the very end of
that century, few mills had flues - the first known use of an horizontal
flue in Britain was at the Middleton Dale Upper Cupola, in Derbyshire,
in 1778. There were indications on a geophysical survey that the cupola
mill at Marrick (built c1703) may have had a very short flue.
As well as his photo's and drawings of mills, Bob Clough's book has a
drawing of The Mine Adventurers of England's mill at Spoutgill in
Swaledale. That is a typical layout and has the advantage of being modular.
Looking forward to reading the report.
Regards,
Mike
