Not always. Sometimes there have been multiple readers before the
'author' - plenty of examples of found and collaged texts around these
days. But even when the author has in the conventional sense 'written'
the poem, their reading of it is going to be different to the first
outside reader. And anyway, the writer, in their strange state of duel
reading and writing (where do we separate those activities in the
processes of writing poetry?) is going to have a unique experience
that a reader can never share.
And hi Anthony Barnett, we've never had contact, though I am a long
standing/sitting reader of yours.
