I'm glad that it helped. It seems that we have been talking at
cross-purposes, and maybe the heat hasn't helped. I doubt our very different
positions can be reconciled, but at least they can be better understood.

Thanks for a complete and clear statement of your position. Expressed in
this way, it is a reasonable position, and had I been able to infer this
from the accumulation of your various statements during the course of the
discussion, I would not have been so insistent for you to spell it out in
full.
Discussions like this tend to begin with very little expression of each
participant’s aesthetic or philosophical assumptions (if they are not
already known), and that lack thereof can cause needles misunderstandings. I’m
aware, though, that for participants to formally express their positions at
the start of each discussion would be impractical.
