Subject: cost to store
<<I wondered if anyone in the UK had attempted to work out how much a
standard box of archives costs per year to store and administer (i.e.
retrieval, listing etc) when it is in a county archive. What should the
figure be based on when it is a facility that already exists? I'm sure that
someone will have attempted to produce such a figure!!>>
Whether or not anyone has, I for one would be inclined to take any such
calculation with a large pinch of salt. There are simply too many variables
- number of individual items in the box (could be just one or alternatively
might be several hundred); their nature and technical complexity; the number
of requests to see them; their frailty or other physical condition; any
conditions imposed by the depositor; possible palaeographical problems, and
not least - the ultimate final quality of any cataloguing.
That's also assuming, of course, that the information is intended for a
readership which actually wants to be given a full and accurate answer!
Aidan Jones.
