Dear All,
This is for UK-based geoscientists and those with
experience of UK systems.
I have received a message from Nic Bilham, policy
officer at the GeolSoc, who is co-ordinating the
GeolSoc's response to two ongoing enquiries by House
of Commons committees:
The Energy and Climate Change Select Committee
is conducting an inquiry into Carbon Capture and Storage.
Details are at http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/energy-and-climate-change-committee/inquiries/parliament-2010/carbon-capture-storage/. The closing date for submission of written evidence is Monday 2 September.
The Business, Innovation and Skills Committee
is conducting an inquiry into the Extractive Industries Sector.
Details are at http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/business-innovation-and-skills/inquiries/parliament-2010/extractive-industries-sector/. The closing date for submission of written evidence is Monday 23 September.
Nic would appreciate input, which may be sent to me
or directly to him at [log in to unmask], with
deadlines for him so he can prepare his response, of:
10 am on Mon 19/8/2013 for the CCS enquiry;
10 am on Mon 9/9/2013 for the Extractive Industries enquiry.
The CCS one is asking for some technical information:
"What types of CCS technology are currently being developed
and how do they differ from one another?"
and
"Are there any safety issues associated with capturing,
transporting and storing carbon dioxide? How could they be
overcome? Who should have responsibility for ensuring these
activities are safe?"
The Extractive Industry enquiry includes the query:
"Does the UK have the skills base to remain a centre for
the extractive industries and to ensure that UK based
businesses benefit from potential future opportunities
such as shale gas?"
If you have any input for these or know people who do,
please respond and pass this message on. In particular, if you have
any evidence to address the Skills Base query, we should
like to have it, too (copy it to me), for the ongoing updating of Aftab
Khan's enquiry into geophysics education in UK universities.
Thanks!
Regards,
Sheila Peacock.
