It so happens I know exactly who is responsible for this site - a company
founded by some alumni from our department.
We've been chatting about the site and some more general issues, like
being able to set up RateMyStudents and see how they like it!
However, I think they're keen to play sensible. Part of the discussion
ranged around the idea of being able to differentiate between rating
individuals and institutions (which might point up issues that many of us
have with with NSS as well, if we're being honest). They have a decent
portfolio of clients, and I don't think they'll be keen on adverse
publicity which might damage their client base and reputation. Of course,
a bit of national media coverage for them is very helpful and I sincerely
believe that when issues arise, as they will, they're principled enough to
make decisions for the right reasons.
Predictably of course, UCU have thrown up their hands and screamed. It's
just one of the reasons why I decided I didn't want to be a member anymore
- the level of engagement with this kind of social application seems
rather less than nuanced, to be honest.
Apparently, they're also using public HESA data, Jeremy.
