I was intrigued by Mr. Hank Cardellos recent article Why The AMAs Obesity
Ruling Is Bad Medicine, which ran on Forbes.com on June 21, 2013. If the
obesity epidemic in America were as easily addressed as Mr. Cardello
suggests, there wouldnt be nearly 100 million individuals with obesity in
America today. Indeed, if solutions were so readily at hand, the growing
attention to the obesity epidemic should already be having a positive
impact. Instead, we see that its prevalence continues to climb, and, even
more concerning, the severity of obesity among adults and children with
the disorder continues to balloon.
.
Unfortunately, addressing the nations obesity epidemic is not an easy fix.
As with cancer, there are many subtypes of obesity, each with different
causes, clinical characteristics, and susceptibility to specific
therapies. This complexity means that a one-size-fits-all approach is not
destined to succeed, and the long sought-after silver bullet is unlikely
to materialize. We know that adoption of a healthy diet and exercise
program works for some, but not all, individuals; others may require
additional therapies. Because our bodies are different, they respond
differently to varied approaches. In our multidisciplinary obesity
medicine practice, we have observed that except for their size and
comorbid diseases, people with obesity reflect the full spectrum and
diversity of humanity, neither better nor worse, more or less righteous,
smarter or dumber, or differently apt to root for the Blackhawks. A few
will lose 60 pounds or more and keep them off with a healthier diet alone;
others see such effects with modest exercise, more sleep, or stress
reduction therapy. Some respond to one medication but not another. And on
and on.
