Weight-related health problems such as diabetes, joint pain and heart
disease cost an estimated $2.4 billion in Louisiana in 2009.
Weight-related complications account for about $1 of every $10 spent on
medical care in the state.
A large fraction of that is covered by Medicaid and Medicare, so the
public is paying for that, said Peter Katzmarzyk, executive director of
Pennington Biomedical Research Institute, which focuses on obesity and its
complications. We dont really have a good assessment for obesity disease
complications, but we know Louisiana has the highest diabetes mortality
rate in the country. We know obesity and diabetes go hand in hand.
As portions have increased and exercise has decreased, our scales are
groaning. Between 1994 and 2006, the average American man gained just more
than 1 pound a year, with average weight rising from 181.3 to 194.7
pounds. The average woman gained right at 1 pound a year in the same
period. Womens average weight rose from 153 to 164.7 pounds, according to
data collected by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the past five decades, Body Mass Index for men has increased by at
least two points, rising from 25.7 to 27.8. Womens BMI increased even more
sharply, rising from 24.9 to 28.2.
Changes in work, school and transportation are behind some of the national
battle with the bulge. Computers, video games and TV also contribute. A
2012 study by Pennington researchers found that children with a TV set in
their bedrooms had more body fat. The study also found a link between body
fat and the amount of TV viewing time.

A yearly snapshot of community well-being estimates that Caddo, Bossier
and DeSoto parishes could more than halve the cost spent on health care if
people lost enough weight.
.
The report, compiled for The Community Foundation, estimates health care
spending at nearly $154 million a year for the three-parish metropolitan
statistical area where nearly 28 percent of people are obese.
.
Reducing the obesity rate to less than 15 percent could save nearly $70
million or $173 for every man, woman and child in the three-parish area.
