My apologies for the late reply, but if searches are still being done the below information may help.
Most genealogy is down by starting with what is the most current and working backwards toward earlier points and people in time. In this case it seems the reverse - locating other descendants of the known ancestor.
The best source for building a descendants chart would be using the federal census records. (available at HeritageQuest for free). Beginning with the 1850 Federal Census all members of the household were listed by name and data like ages place born and place of birth of the mother and father of each person listed. Prior to the 1850 Census the only name listed was the head of household. Any other members were simply counted by gender and age.
A second place to look with the local historical society, the local public library and the state historical society and libraries where the ancestor lived. There could well be books or family histories that have been done giving the descendants. (The quality of the proofs widely varies).
Another place to locate descendants would be a family association. There are hundreds of family associations -- membership organizations-- that exist to document and share information on specific surnames.
One more quick place to locate others who are or have been researching the same ancestor is rootsweb.com a free site. One must follow the instructions there exactly or the search will not be productive. Go to rootsweb.com click on the "Family Trees" tab in the bar near the top of the page then click on "Advanced" on that page that comes up Then input the name and some other data you have to locate records and information that others have posted about the ancestor.
I hope this helps,
Gael G

== I am trying to trace some Howard relatives in the United States. My great-great uncle Matthew Howard emigrated to the United States in 1894. He went as a coachman for Rudyard Kipling to Vermont. He eventually took his wife and 8 children over and when Kipling fell out with his in-laws and returned to England, the Howards remained behind and became American citizens. Matthew was the publican of the golden lion public house at over, Winsford Cheshire before he went to the states and before that he was the coachman at Darnhall Hall.
His father was William Howard of Hartford. His younger brother Richard was my great grandfather.
Matthew’s wife was Elizabeth W. Howard born Liverpool, and his children included William (1881), J. W. (1880) and 6 others. My mother remembers that during the 2nd war an American cousin came to visit the Howard family. He was a doctor who had studied at either Yale or Harvard and she thinks that his family lived in Long Island N.Y. I would love to contact any members of the family as I have a lot of information on family history.
