The theatre & science communication Enlightenment Café series is developing a new show alongside UCL – New Atlantis - exploring the tempestuous relationship between Humanity and Water.
The project is currently lined up to take place in Winter 2013, as part of the United Nations year of Water Cooperation, in a site-specific venue in London (to be confirmed).
Would you, or your organisation be interested in being part of the show?
This is the third large-scale show after the sell out success of A Victorian Wonderland of Scientific Exploration and Deadinburgh. We have worked with science communicators, institutions and researchers placing them in a theatrical environment that enhances the way they talk about their work.
New Atlantis
Audiences will arrive at New Atlantis, the HQ of an international organisation designed to monitor the world’s changing water patterns, charged with stepping in to save the day. We are reaching a tipping point, and the scientists and characters of New Atlantis have opened their doors to the public in order to find people who can assist in helping humanity across the globe. They are seeking heroes.
Inspiration for the theatrical world has been derived from the likes of Thunderbirds HQ, X Men (and women) HQ and Francis Bacon’s book – New Atlantis.
Alongside live demonstrations and interactions with scientists and New Atlantis characters, we aim to profile conversations with, and the stories of people in areas of the world currently being affected by changing water patterns; from Tuvalu, to Ethiopia, to the Arctic Circle.
Similarly, as with our last show, Deadinburgh - we are looking to involve Secondary Schools, and develop a series of short films of the science in the show and make a fascinating piece of immersive theatre.
We are currently looking for other interested parties to join in collaborating on this project, who would like to either:
• Represent your scientific institution as one of the scientists interacting with audience members and or,
• Demonstrate and present the science to audiences.
We are interested in forming partnerships within the following fields (although not an exhaustive list): Biomedicine, Engineering (Civil as well as Biochemical), Physical Sciences, and Naval Architecture. Covering topics such as energy, technology, monitoring and research of global water patterns, conflict and others.
Previous Enlightenment Cafes show reviews:
‘An unmissable night of entertainment, intrigue, and debate - with a touch of education snuck in when you aren’t looking’ - New Scientist
‘Thrillingly immediate’ - Financial Times
‘And while there’s plenty of talk about bridging the gap between arts and science, this is a show that actually does it; and provides a good, exhausting, thought-provoking night out into the bargain.’ - The Scotsman
