We’re looking for an excellent online content editor and writer of news articles. The successful candidate will work with scientists, press releases and complex science papers to create articles about major science revelations and nature news. The online content editor will also shape the Museum’s editorial production across our websites, mobile platforms, apps and gallery multimedia for topics as varied as volcanoes, evolution, exhibitions, science and kids’ stuff. Maternity cover (12 months). Science degree and relevant experience essential.

Online Content Editor and News, Natural History Museum

Role Summary

The Online Content Editor and News is responsible for ensuring that all editorial content on the Museum’s website follows Museum guidelines; that it is topical, accurate, and engaging and follows best practice in terms of editorial in digital media. Ensures tone and content meet the needs of the Museum’s audiences. 
Works with Senior Content Editor, Managing Editor Online and all those producing content for the website.
Responsible for writing and producing the Museum’s website news articles that reflect the Museum’s science, and for managing the online News section.
Responsible for liaising with cross-departmental teams to ensure shared knowledge of topical content output and opportunities for collaboration, eg. through running the Virtual News Desk.

Academic qualifications

A degree in natural sciences, or equivalent experience in a scientific institution

Knowledge, skills and experience (requirements)
•	A minimum of 3 year experience as an editor and writer in an online environment.
•	Experience of delivering editorial feedback on the work of those producing online content.
•	Proven experience of managing and developing Editorial Style Guidelines for online, and communicating them clearly.
•	Proven experience of ensuring editorial is produced with the appropriate tone to suit the requirements of differing audiences.
•	Good organisational skills, demonstrating the ability to set and manage conflicting priorities.
•	Excellent written English.
•	Strong communication skills.
•	Experience of writing popular science web copy from complex science information.
•	Proven experience of monitoring performance of editorial outputs and KPIs and adapting approach to drive reach and engagement.
Main tasks and responsibilities (job description)

The Online Content Editor will:
•	Lead the copy-editing of content for the Museum website and other digital platforms, ensuring it is topical, accurate, engaging, follows Museum guidelines and web best practice, meets the needs of our different audiences, and ensures the Museum’s position as a voice of authority on the natural world.
•	Promote the delivery of high quality written output in all of the Museum’s public-facing work, through providing web editorial support and guidance to those who write for our digital platforms to ensure they understand best editorial practice.
•	Manage and develop the Museum web writing guidelines and make sure they are effectively communicated across the Museum to those producing online content.
•	Deliver a comprehensive, consistent, accurate and inspirational editorial service that reflects the Museum’s brand and will drive audiences to engage with the Museum further.
•	Edit copy of external web content producers as and when necessary.
•	Lead website news writing and production ensuring articles are engaging, scientifically accurate, timely and maintain high quality and popularity. Manage the website News section, planning and publishing news throughout the year that show the science of the Museum.
•	Run the Virtual News Desk, a topicality forum for sharing cross-departmental information to ensure topical output for the Museum is coordinated.
•	Manage priorities in conjunction with the Senior Content Editor and Managing Editor Online where necessary.
•	Report on website statistics for the News section (Google through Analytics).
•	Ensure that editorial output complies with relevant legislation (eg Data protection, Intellectual Property Rights and copyright).
•	Develop and maintaining external contacts within the sector, keeping up-to-date with developments and best practice in digital media.
