Hello Matt
Meeting the NMC standards is a challenge. It seems to me that they were
developed for HV PTs and do not recognise the difficulties faced by OHNs. An
OHN who is taking on a student for unpaid work experience is not likely to
be prepared to attend a formal training course. Furthermore, I would rather
place a student with an excellent practitioner who is a role model than with
a practitioner with less experience but who happens to hold a teaching
qualification.
In common with some other institutions we map prospective practice teachers
experience against the NMC standards, the ENB 998 could be part of that
mapping process. In my opinion most OHNs are involved in teaching whether
that is 1:1 or to groups such as induction programmes, teaching managers,
health and safety training. Etc Also senior OHNs who are managers are
involved in teaching and assessing new staff such as practice teachers.
If you would like to take one of our students I would be very grateful if
you could contact me off list.
Thanks
Anne
