On Murdoch Day, Sat 15th June, when Redruth celebrates one of its most famous former residents, inventor William Murdoch (1754 -1839), father of the modern gas industry, CMR gallery will be opening its doors to the public for an exhibition titled GASLIGHTING. GASLIGHTING is an exhibition & series of linked events produced in association with West Cornwall Freedom from Torture Supporters Group.
The focus of this curated programme is ‘gaslighting’ - a form of mental torture involving the systematic erosion of another’s reality, employed to control victims. The term was coined from the famous 1940’s play and film ‘Gaslight’, and this week - long programme, prompted by the annual celebrations for William Murdoch, who invented piped gaslight, invites us to reconsider our understandings of torture.
