Hi Sarah
For Android devices I would recommend TapeMachine Recorder (it may or may
not exist in iTunes Store). I have used this on a variety of phones for as
a cheap substitute for an industry standard digital microphone (such as as
the DRM85) and have found it to work brilliantly. There is a nice live
waveform when recording (to monitor clipping and background noise) and has
some basic editing features. If, however, the audio is to be recorded
outdoors and requires the clarity of speech without noise pollution then a
good quality digital mic (such as the aforementioned DRM85) is the way to
go.
