Dear colleague,
With apologies for cross-posting, I wanted to make you aware of the
following announcement which the Collections Trust has issued today
concerning Wikimedia UK and the OpenCulture 2013 conference.
Wikimedia UK will provide an information hub at OpenCulture 2013
<http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/openculture2013> on 2-3 July to
discuss its projects with museums and other institutions, and to provide
delegates with an insight into how it can help with digitising their
collections and making them freely available online.
Commenting on the collaboration, Wikimedia UK's GLAM (Galleries,
Libraries, Archives and Museums) Coordinator Jonathan Cardy, says
"Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in
the sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment".
Wikimedia UK <http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> is the charity
that promotes Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> ,
Wikipedia's image library Wikimedia Commons
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> , and other Wikimedia
projects in the UK, including participation in the world's largest
photography competition
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013_in_
the_United_Kingdom> this September.
Jonathan has joined Wikimedia UK to coordinate and expand its outreach
work to Museums and the rest of the GLAM sector. He says: "We are
delighted the Collections Trust has invited us to OpenCulture 2013.
Please come and talk to us about the things we are doing with Museums
and other GLAMs. Whether you are interested in multilingual
accessibility
<http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Case_studies/Derby_Museum> ,
improving Metadata
<http://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/02/the-british-library-picturing-cana
da-and-photos-of-cats/> , or just helping write the reference work
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/BM/Hoxne_challenge> that
many of your visitors use, we can help.
"If you are considering digitising your collection, please come and talk
to us about making it freely available to the whole of humanity - or at
least the five hundred million who visit our websites every month".
The Wikimedia UK Hub will be situated in the exhibition area at
OpenCulture 2013, the Collections Trust's flagship event to be presented
at the Kia Oval on 2-3 July. The event will attract at least 300
attendees, and its programme and delegate booking are online at
www.openculture2013.org.uk <http://www.openculture2013.org.uk/> .
