We are using Freebase quite extensively in our project,
DECIPHER<http://decipher-research.eu>.
We use their Suggest API to improve the metadata for various fields like
Location and People. While I can't answer for its availability at least the
data in it is fully open under the CC-BY licence. see
https://developers.google.com/freebase/data.
