Hi all
I think there has been a tendency for some staff here to have done this also, but the prevailing practice has been to leave it in if there is any useful keyword/explanatory material in the blurb. Editorial rights have been retained, to remove and reduce to useful text as required, however.
We're moving to Library Assistants doing copy cataloguing (i.e. most of it), however, so I would guess we may well move to a 'leave it in without critical evaluation' policy, unless the individual checking the record has strong feelings about it.
Best wishes

Subject: Re: 520 Summary etc field
Hi there,
Interesting discussion.
It's always been our policy to delete 520s almost automatically, unless they are really useful. It's been a concern for us that they tend to be a rather subjective publisher's take on the book in hand, and we don't feel it's our role as a library to opine one way or the other on the subject matter. This is however becoming an increasing feeling of swimming against the tide in this environment of bulk downloads, shelf ready etc. An issue we're still grappling with....
Good to hear other people's views.
Regards,
Jackie

Subject: 520 Summary etc field
Hello,
Does anyone routinely include a 520 Summary etc field in catalogue records? Our OPAC can now display this field so we would like to start coding it, and while it is present in some imported records it is not present in our older catalogue records or any original cataloguing we do. How do people derive the summary? Would transcribing the blurb on the back of a book be sufficient?
Thanks for your time
