Post Doctoral Researcher Level 2, Psychological Sciences
Birkbeck College, University of London -Department of Psychological Sciences
Purpose and Main Duties
A postdoctoral researcher Level 2 post is available with Dr Marie Smith in the department of psychological sciences at Birkbeck College, University of London, Dr Emily Farran at the nearby Institute of Education and Professor Annette Karmiloff-Smith, Birkbeck. The Department of Psychological Sciences at Birkbeck is an internationally leading research institution in the fields of brain and cognitive development, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive modelling and is a centre of vibrant research and teaching. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008)<http://www.bbk.ac.uk/psychology/our-research/rae>, the department was ranked 5th in the UK for the excellence of its research. Dr Marie Smith’s group’s research focuses on the perception of visual stimuli, with a particular focus on the special case of the perception of faces and facial expressions of emotion, using state of the art behavioural approaches alone and in conjunction with neuroimaging techniques.
The postdoctoral researcher Level 2 is required to lead the day-to-day running of the experiments as set out in the Leverhulme Trust Research grant, ‘Exploration of typical and atypical development of flexible face processing strategies’, awarded to Dr Smith, Dr Farran and Professor Karmiloff-Smith. One of the most important skills humans possess is the ability to rapidly and accurately process faces. To date, most research has focused on the adult face-processing system, leaving unresolved the fundamental question of how these remarkable abilities develop through childhood. In this grant we seek to fill this gap employing psychophysical and neuro-imaging methods to explore the development of facial identity and expression processing at neural and behavioural levels in typically developing children, typical adults and in individuals with Williams syndrome who process faces atypically. Unique to our approach, we will establish the specific facial features that are being used to accurately categorize faces, and explore where and when these features are processed in the brain. Not only is this project the first attempt to assign specific visual information content to neural responses in children, it will be the first full characterization of the time course of brain-behaviour relationships while processing faces in WS.
Candidate Requirements
The post holder will be responsible for running the experiments as set out in the grant both in the lab and on location in schools using behavioural and EEG/ERP methodologies, as well as coding and analysing data from these measures. Data analysis will be conducted using MATLAB and although it is not essential that the post-holder be expert with this software on application, a willingness to learn and ability to do so is essential to this post. Previous experience with EEG/ERPs is an advantage but not necessary as training will be provided.
Further Information
Salary: £31,331 per annum plus the London Allowance of £2,976 per annum
The closing date for completed applications is Sunday 14 July 2013 at midnight
