The Netherlands Cancer Institute, with specialized care of
the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital has a long lasting
history in the improvement of breast cancer therapy.
Currently, we are seeking a talented candidate to work on a
project for improved targeting for surgery and radiotherapy
of breast cancer. Key problems that need to be solved in the
project involve some of the hardest deformable image
registration problems: problems where large anatomical
differences occur between image acquisitions (e.g. large
deformations due to images acquired in prone and supine
positions and (dis)appearing structures between image
acquisitions due to surgery). We recently introduced the
concept of multi-objective optimization for deformable image
registration. This approach allows for more insightful
tuning of how to combine important objectives in deformable
image registration such as transformation effort and
similarity measure. To find the transformation that aligns
two images we currently use an advanced, powerful
model-based evolutionary algorithm that exploits features of
a problem's structure in a principled manner via
probabilistic modelling.
This project aims to further develop this approach, which
involves both algorithmic design and physical modelling, and
test it in particular on 1) aligning prone and supine
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, and 2) pre-operative
and post-operative computed tomography (CT) data. This
project is financed by the Dutch Cancer Society and will be
performed as collaboration between the Netherlands Cancer
Institute (NKI), Academic Medical Center (AMC) and the
Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI). All institutes are
located in Amsterdam.
