Quantifying stylistic distance between Athenian vase-paintings
ALL WELCOME
Computer-aided stylometry has recently been gaining attention as a tool
for painting attribution. It nevertheless remains a largely untapped
resource for the classical archaeologist seeking to map the complex
relationships between the different painters of Greek vases. Before
such a monumental task can be undertaken, a necessary first step is the
construction of some objective method by which one painter may be
claimed to be close or distant, in stylistic terms, to another. This
paper proposes two approaches to quantifying the notion of stylistic
distance, and demonstrates them on a set of vase-paintings from 6th
century Athens.
The seminar will be followed by wine and refreshments.
