‘Translating, Transposing, Transforming:
Byron and the Nineteenth Century’
5-6 December 2013
The Byron Centre, University of Manchester
The Byron Centre at the University of Manchester invites paper proposals for its 2013 interdisciplinary conference, on the topic of ‘Translating, Transposing, Transforming: Byron and the Nineteenth Century’, to be held at the University of Manchester, 5-6 December 2013. Papers from any disciplinary perspective would be welcome on any aspect of the conference theme, which might include, for example:
• the translation of Byron’s poetry into other languages;
• the nineteenth-century critical reception of Byron, both in Britain and abroad;
• Byron’s influence on nineteenth-century world literature;
• Byron’s poetic constructions of (European) ‘modernity’;
• Byron’s engagements with nineteenth-century European literature/art/music/theatre;
• Byron and nineteenth-century politics in Greece, Italian, Poland, Russia, etc;
• Byron and nineteenth-century nationalism;
• Byron’s fall from grace and/or continuing importance in Victorian Britain;
• Byron and a host individual writers/artists/musicians ranging from Dickens to Pushkin, Berlioz to Verdi, Nietzsche to Ruskin, Turner to Delacroix;
• the ‘transposition’ of Byron’s poetry into music;
• Byron and nineteenth-century British art from John Martin to Ford Madox Brown and beyond;
• Byron and nineteenth-century drama;
• Byron as Romantic icon;
• Byron’s celebrity;
• Byron’s visual image in nineteenth-century culture;
• Twentieth-century reinventions of Byron in relation to the nineteenth century;
• Byron in academic and/or popular constructions of Romanticism.
