William Cobbett at 250: A Colloquium at Nuffield College, Oxford
Friday 13th September 2013, 9.30am-5pm
2013 is the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Cobbett (1763-1835), the radical reformer, journalist and agrarian. Cobbett remains of considerable interest to academic across several fields, including history, English, economics, journalism, sociology and cultural studies. This one-day event will bring together speakers from across these disciplines to discuss Cobbett's life, work and legacies.
Topics to be covered include: Cobbett and utopianism; James Gillray; 1819; Scotland; transatlantic radicalism; Anne Cobbett; Chartism; 'Englishness'; George Eliot and Victorian realism.
The programme will include four sessions and a wine reception at the end of the day. There will also be a display of Cobbett books and manuscripts from the Cole collection at Nuffield library.
