Sorry meant to send this to everyone. My reply to Jessica regarding water alarms. Kath
Jessica
Sorry I missed your first enquiry.
It's been some years since we had a water alarm system installed in what is a small strongroom. Can't recall who we purchased the original system from I'm afraid. But as we had an ingress of water from above besides 3 detectors on the floor we had detectors places on the top of each mobile shelving unit.
One thing that helped ease the burden of the cost was our Insurance Section who coughed up half the cost of the system on the basis that they may be saving themselves a load of money in future should flooding occur again (which it had in the first place). So it may be worthwhile contacting your insurance sections if you have one and see if they have any budget for preventative measures.
I've just had part of the electronics replaced which came from J.A.M. http://www.jam.uk.com/ who are based in Essex.
Cheers, Kath

Subject: water detection systems - summary of responses
First of all thanks to everyone who responded. In summary;
- A number of people mentioned Andel (www.andel.co.uk) for supply and installation of water detection systems. No up to date figures could be supplied, but a system installed in 2008 cost the host organisation something in the range of £4000. This included three large stores. However, as far as I know this was a system required for a limited amount of time, I have no idea of yearly maintenance costs. Their systems appear to be pretty robust and no cases of false alarms were reported.
- A list serv member in Northern Ireland mentioned FOIS LTD for the installation of "Aqua Alarm", Unit 1c 4 Westbank Drive, Belfast BT3 9LA [log in to unmask]
Unfortunately, for those who are working in very small, or simply under funded archives, these systems are probably still not affordable.
I had no response regarding whether anyone had used water detection systems similar to those linked to in my original email (see below). I can only assume that people get the professionals in, or rely on measures to prevent material being affected by leaks. There were other examples where people had installed systems at considerable expense, which then turned out not to work effectively.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had experience of water detection systems in archive stores, in particular if anyone has found any low cost, reasonably effective solutions that they would recommend. There are products on the market which have the potential to be useful to small, not well resourced archives (http://www.quicksafe.co.uk/mobeye-thermoguard-cm2200.htm). It would be great to know if anyone has tried a DIY approach to these kind of problems in archive stores that cannot be connected to a building management system.
Answers off list please, I will summarise and post back.
Cheers,
Jessica
