Dear Dave and others,
We are grappling with a similar issue at Sheffield in terms of dealing
with modules at faculty-level which are not linked to HESA cost centres
in the strictest sense. The HEFCE guidance suggests that all modules
should be mapped to cost centres based on the staff teaching the module.
So, as Ray from Essex has indicated, we will have to review this
annually and amend the cost centres and any splits based on who is doing
the teaching in the given year. We will now be undertaking a more formal
annual cycle of review of units and cost centre mappings to get around
this.
Hope this helps.
David

We’re in the final steps of the process of assigning module activity
from the old social sciences cost centre (CC29) into the new cost centre
structure for the forthcoming HESA returns.
But we have a handful of generic research methods in social sciences
modules that don’t map easily to the new more detailed cost centres.
The first question I’ve posed is “which staff are teaching and
contributing” to the modules – to which the answer has been – it’s not
fixed year to year, as it depends which academic has the resource to
deliver, and they may come from different departments…
Under the old cost centre model, we wouldn’t have to think about this
too much as it would just be CC29. But now we need to make a decision
about allocating this activity, or keep allocating it on an annual basis
based on who has delivered the modules.
Has anyone else had issues with this type of generic research methods
activity, or has it been easy to follow the location of the staff
delivering it?
Thanks,
Dave
