The X-ray course at the University of Oulu, Department of
Biochemistry in week-38, September 16-20, 2013.

The course is aimed at providing hands-on training for data collection
and data processing with our in-house equipment. The Bruker data
collection unit will be available for course participants throughout
the whole week. The CCD-detector and kappa-goniometer allow for
efficient collection of optimized, highly redundant and high quality
datasets. The course will provide extensive teaching and especially
hands on training in protein crystallographic methods. Researchers new
in the field of protein X-ray crystallography are also encouraged to
apply. The course will also touch on data collection at
synchrotrons.

Our Linux class room will be available over the entire course for
data-processing of data collected from own crystals or test data and for
further calculations. Each participant will be provided with a
computer and therefore a limited number of participants can be
accepted. The format of the course is still not completely settled.

Key speakers will include:
George Sheldrick (University of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany)
Andrey Lebedev (CCP4, STFC, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot, UK)
Severine Freisz (Bruker, Karlsruhe, Germany)
Pierre Aller (Diamond Light Source, Didcot, UK)

In the current outline of the course the emphasis on the first two
days is on providing hands-on usage of data collection in small
groups. Subsequently the collected data can be processed using the
Proteum2 software in the Linux class-room. There will be lectures on
data collection strategies and on data processing, as well as on
molecular replacement by CCP4 and experimental phasing with SHELX
C/D/E. Lectures on the basics of the protein crystallographic methods
will also be included. On Friday the topic will be data collection at
Diamond and PiMS-datatracking. This may include a remote data
collection session.

The course is supported by Biocenter Oulu and Biostruct-X. The course
is organized by Tiila Kiema, Evangelia Kapetaniou, Kristian Koski,
Lari Lehtiö and Rik Wierenga. The deadline for registration is August
11, 2013. For registration, please contact Lari Lehtiö
([log in to unmask]) or Kristian Koski ([log in to unmask]).
There are no registration fees. As the number of participants will be
limited, please include a brief motivation statement, your prior
experience in protein crystallography and indicate whether you will
bring your own samples.
