In 2014 MIM will host an important temporary exhibition in honour of Adolphe Sax (1814-1894) who famously invented the saxophone. Sax's other inventions include medical devices, patented between 1862 and 1866. We are not aware of any of these being preserved. A dispenser her inventer-known as the 'Sax tar dispenser'- was used to spread tar, creosote and other substances with the intention to treat illnesses as well as disinfect hospitals. A variant on that system even allowed saxophone players to treat themselves while playing.
The MIM is looking for such appliances, with a view to put them on public display between 8th Feb 2014 and 11th Jan 2015. If you do know anything about whereabouts of these devices, please do contact:
