Three-year postdoctoral position available in Atmospheric Chemistry
Project title: Peroxy Radical Photolysis and its Impact on Atmospheric Chemistry
A postdoctoral position is now available in the School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds for a period of 3 years. Applications are invited from motivated individuals on a project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council to test the hypothesis that an important missing source of atmospheric hydroxyl radicals in some environments is the photolysis of peroxy radicals generated during the oxidation of volatile organic compounds. Recent field measurements in forested regions have revealed much higher concentrations of the hydroxyl (OH) radical than can explained by current atmospheric models. The project will investigate this hypothesis mainly through laser based laboratory experiments to determine the fundamental details of the photolysis process. The results will be used as input into atmospheric models to assess the impact of peroxy radical photolysis.
You will have a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Physics or a related discipline or have submitted a thesis prior to taking up the appointment. Experience in some of the following areas is essential: Laboratory studies of chemical kinetics, reaction dynamics or photochemistry, use of pulsed lasers, laser induced fluorescence or absorption spectroscopy, data acquisition and instrument control (e.g. LabVIEW), use of vacuum and flow systems.
The salary will be at University Grade 6 (£24,766 - £29,541 p.a.) or University Grade 7 (£30,424 - £36,298 p.a.) dependent upon qualifications and experience. It is likely that an appointment will be made no higher than £30,424 p.a. since there are funding limitations which dictate the level at which this appointment can start.
