Hi Gemma,
We do not do any surveillance following one-off accidental exposures but tag their OH electronic record to record that exposure. We always insist on an incident report (Datix) so the exposure can be investigated/ actioned. The asbestos regs give further guidance following exposure for licensed workers.
Many years ago we used to give annual questionnaires and undertake spirometry and BP checks but stopped and now only give advice/ information.
If you go back to the HSE guidance on health surveillance, you'll note that accidental exposure to small quantities of asbestos containing material may not meet the threshold for surveillance:
- there is a valid way to detect a disease or condition; and
- it is reasonably likely that damage to health will occur under the particular conditions at work; and
- health surveillance is likely to benefit the employee

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Health surveillance for potential asbestos exposure
Hi, Im after some advice on what health surveillance is required for potential exposure to asbestos whilst carrying out non-licenced asbestos work. I am thinking an annual questionnaire? I had a look on the HSE website and they have a respiratory symptom questionnaire for licensed work. I am interested to find out what other NHS trusts use and any other advice regarding health surveillance on this topic.
Many thanks
