In the current depressed economy you are lucky to be in the position to
increase your days so it is important that you get your business plan right.
If I were in HR and looking at your plan I would be looking at how your
interventions would add value and health promotion activities may be
something they find attractive. However, it is important that any strategy
you recommend remains business focused. For example, I would suggest that
undertaking BP measurements in isolation would not be particularly useful -
you may just get the "worried-well" attending. However,it could be part of a
broader health promotion strategy eg you could also focus on healthy eating
in the staff canteen. One of my current students works in a department where
they have been very innovative in the way they have approached health
promotion activities and turned a reactive service around into very
pro-active provision. One of their interventions is soon to be included as a
case study within an OH nursing textbook
Are there particular health issues such as exposure to hazards such as
chemical or physical hazards eg noise or vibrating tools? If noise is an
issue look at how you could work with H&S to develop a hearing conservation
programme which includes toolbox talks. The HSE website has some useful
info.
You need to be mindful of the costs - they will be increasing your salary to
cover the extra days. So unless you have significant issues re MSDs I would
leave bringing in the physio for a while. The additional cost may mean that
you don't get your plan off the ground. Is there anything you could do eg be
involved in ergonomic risk assessments etc. Then instigate the above -
look at how that impacts on the organisation then think about bringing in
the physios as a more longer term intervention.
Hope this gives you some ideas
