The Renaissance Society of America (RSA) Meeting, 27-29 March 2014, New
York, USA
*Theater, power and religion on the Italian stage (1400-1600)*
This panel invites papers on Italian Theater, both secular and
religious, from the Renaissance to the Early Baroque period.Religion and
politics have always played an important role in Renaissance Italian
Theater./Sacre rappresentazioni/, spiritual comedies, and secular plays
(or tragedies), but also festivals, have often been camouflaged
representations of political agendas related to Italian ruling
dynasties, and/or secular and religious power.Proposals on political,
religious and dynastic themes are welcome.
Topics might include, but are not limited to:
-Italian Renaissance Theater
-Italian Religious theater and political themes (1400-1600)
-Political themes in secular and religious theater (1400-1600)
-The role of Renaissance dynasties (1400-1600)
-Festivals, including religious performances
-Machiavelli, Ariosto and others.
-The Papacy and theater
-Actors and actresses and their relationships with secular or religious
power.
Proposals for these sessions should be submitted electronically to

Each proposal must include: the paper title; an abstract of the paper
(150-word maximum); a short list of keywords; and the speaker’s brief
curriculum vitae (300-word maximum).
Deadline for submission of proposals: 30 May 2013.
