Thanks Nick, I had a look through this in Jan when you announced it and it looks like it will be very useful. Will there be something for people to work on other than assessing their organisation against the range statements? I probably haven't quite understood how it will work. Look forward to seeing the Excel version.

An audit is certainly an important part of the process, but for some organisations it seems to be moving forward from there that they find difficult.
Does anyone else know of any work in this area?

Best
Martin

Hi Martin,

Many thanks for this. This is exactly the rationale that led us to create the Digital Benchmarks tool as a self-assessment process using an Excel spreadsheet. The idea is that smaller museums can work their way though it (either on their own or with support from an MDO, consultant or friend from a local museums) and it will give them a visual idea of where they are today and where they might go next (which I believe is the basis of all good strategy!). Of course, we won't mind if larger museums want to do so too!

Along the way, the range statements are designed to give people ideas about the kinds of question they might want to ask themselves. Rather than pushing out a Digital Strategy at the other end, we would hope that it will give them a strategic overview (without using those actual words) of where they want to go.

The draft tool is up at http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/discover/sustaining-digital/1608-digital-benchmarks-for-the-culture-sector (scroll down for the downloadable doc). We're fighting a million deadlines at the moment, but should be able to publish the revised range-statements in an interactive Excel by the end of the month. Any and all help in (a) making them better and (b) getting people to use them would be greatly appreciated!

All best,

Nick

Some useful references have come up via this thread, but I haven't seen anything that takes account of the issues of or arises out of work with smaller or lower capacity museums or organisations. Am I missing something obvious?

The main issues we have identified in our work relate not so much to 'knowing the best way to go about it', but more barriers like lack of expertise / confidence among staff members to initiate the data gathering, sustain the discussions, facilitate clear decision-making and so on. Most larger organisations know they need to create a digital strategy and will find a way to make it happen, but for some in smaller or lower capacity places it can seem like a waste of time 'thinking rather than doing'. Does anyone know of any other work along those lines?

Also from this year's Museums and the Web, if nobody's mentioned it already, you might find the 'Institutional Strategy Digest' fanzine useful. Contributions from Tate, IWM, Whitney etc

HI Natalie,

the MCG's last Museums on the Web conference was themed around being 'strategically digital', so you might find some of the event reports and slides useful:
http://museumscomputergroup.org.uk/2012/12/01/ukmw12-round-up/ and http://museumscomputergroup.org.uk/2012/12/06/ukmw12-strategically-digital-from-our-official-event-blogger/

The MCG also supported a panel on the subject at the last Museums Association conference, I've written some of it up http://openobjects.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/go-digital-at-museums-association-2012.html

Finally, the international Museums and the Web conference has hosted some great papers on the realities of writing and implementing digital strategies including:
