Dear Friends,
Originally the plan for the topic of the next LCDM was Gravitational
Waves, a subject which had been requested several sessions ago.
Unfortunately some of the speakers who we wanted to contribute to this
session were either sick or have very recently become parents. However
we do have two excellent speakers on the subject:-
Laura Bethke "Anisotropies in the Gravitational Wave Background from
Preheating"
Sasha Polnarev "Gravitational Waves and the CMB"
However, because of the lack of GW speakers, the second two talks will
then be back on the subject of the Planck data, and I am very pleased
that we have again two excellent speakers:-
Alan Heavens "Planck and primordial Non-Gaussianity"
Hiranya Peiris "Planck and Inflation"
Which will lead us very nicely into the next meeting after the summer on
Thursday 19th September which is completely devoted to "Inflation after
Planck". Hiranya will not be able to come to this meeting in September
which is another reason we should hear her now.
I hope to see as many of you as possible at 1400 on May 30th at the RAS
as usual.
Sincere regards,
Malcolm
p.s. As some of you have probably heard we here at KCL are recovering
from the shock of our colleague and dear friend Alan Michette passing
away far too prematurely. Alan was part of the team of 65 (with some
other "Londoners" including Tegid Jones at UCL) who originally
discovered neutral currents at CERN in the 1970s, a key early test of
electroweak theory. Since then he did important work in X-ray physics.
His contribution to the life of our department and to the academic
development and pastoral welfare of our undergraduates cannot be
overstated. His passing has left a huge hole in our relatively small
department and it will take us a long time to come to terms with losing
him.
