Open Access: How it will change your professional life

Course Outline:
This one-day workshop explores the definitions, economics and growth of
Open Access and explores practicalities, challenges and opportunities
for the future. Delegates will be encouraged to raise questions and
debate issues of immediate concern throughout the day.
Programme includes:
* Definitions of Open Access (Green, Gold, gratis and libre, toll
access)
* Costs of Open Access (What are the costs? How are they met?
Implications for institutions and publishers)
* The growth of Open Access (Brief history. The impact of the Finch
Report. Attitudes of funders in the UK and Europe. Gold Open Access as
a disruptive technology)
* Quality (Peer review practices. Citation advantage)
* Copyright (Traditional toll access. Creative Commons)
* Obstacles and usage (Attitudes of researchers. The practicalities of
moving from toll access to Open Access. Growth of search engines)
* Influence on the research process (Open Data. Beyond the article)

Information and library professionals keen to understand the impact of
the growth of Open Access on their work, their institutions and the
current and future services they provide for their users.
Course Presenter: David Ball
David Ball is a consultant specialising in scholarly publishing,
e-books, virtual learning environments, design and management of
academic libraries. His current projects include research in the area
of open access publishing for the Public Library of Science (PLOS) and
the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften.
As University Librarian and Head of Academic Development Services at
Bournemouth University from 1994 to 2012, he created a vibrant library
service, winning two major national awards: in 2007 the prestigious
quinquennial SCONUL Library Design Award, and in 2009 the Times Higher
Education Leadership and Management Awards for Outstanding Library Team.
