George Roe is Senior Indexer at the House of Commons Library and was the 2012 recipient of the ESU/CILIP travelling librarian award. George used his visit during the closing stages of the 2012 Presidential elections to study how libraries in the United States can enrich the democratic process. He was particularly keen to explore how US libraries seek to engage people from a variety of backgrounds, especially those generally considered to be marginalised from the process.
George visited a diverse range of libraries and library bodies across 3 states with highlights including a visit to the Library of Congress to see how the library adds value to legislative material, meeting lobbyists at the American Library Association’s Office of Government Relations and a visit to the Urban Libraries Council to learn about their work in promoting the centrality of libraries for the civic engagement of urban communities.
