What does it mean for men and women to be equal? Why is feminism constantly subjected to backlash, and gender equality is considered only a women's issue? Is evolution towards equality a granted path, or are we going backwards?
The first obstacle towards equality is the lacking recognition of existing inequality and therefore the denied legitimacy of the struggle itself. Against a EU average of 58.5% in 2011 (Eurostat), in Italy less than half of the female population works, a percentage which drops to 1/3 in the South (Istat, data for 2012); in 2008, more than 50% of women who stopped working when becoming a parent were forced to resign against their will (Istat); sexism is widespread at all levels, from the marketing of children's toys to the images and language conveyed by the media.
Gender inequality is a cultural as much as a political and legislative problem, but the different aspects are rarely tackled with a holistic approach. Our first objective is to show the extent of the influence of the gender factor on both sexes, based on hard evidence as well as cultural representation. A snapshot of the current situation will be followed by a discussion of the possible measures to be taken.
